I have a corporate background and it’s easy to see the overlap in running a business and parenting.
Parents have built-in leadership styles that impact how they’re able to lead their families. There are three models of parenting that I want to share with you.
The Rug is a parent who is KIND without being FIRM. They’re a people pleaser. The RUG is a parent who can’t stick to the rules and says “yes” to things they don’t want to do (and either will do it grudgingly or not do it at all). This type of parent gets walked all over by their kids and resents being treated badly.
The Brick is a parent who is FIRM without being KIND. They are tough with lots of rules and boundaries. When a parent is a BRICK, they get into power struggles with their child. There is no flexibility to negotiate.
The Rubber Band is a parent who is KIND + FIRM. They have the flexibility to solve problems but the firmness to have a boundary that the child can’t negotiate past. The RUBBER BAND stretches and negotiates so that both sides feel like winners
Being the Rubber Band is the best way to show up in the world!
If you would like to talk through how this applies to your family I invite you to book a 20 minute (free) call with me here.
